She’s been a star on the hardwood throughout her prep career and now Joy Cushman is making her mark on the cross country course.

The W.F. West senior ran a new personal best 21 minutes, 36.60 seconds on Wednesday afternoon in a three-team Evergreen Conference meet held at Makarenko Park in Grays Harbor County.

It’s the second victory of the season for Cushman, who is out for XC for the first time since her seventh grade season, according to athletic dot net. The Bearcats had four other runners – Azami Eckerson, Kate Turner, Tru Hamrick and Shaylee Miles – all placed in the top-10.

Black Hills’ Maddie Knight came in second with a season-best time of 21:53.70 while Averie Reynolds nabbed sixth place.

On the boys side, W.F. West’s Connor Clary took second place with a time of 17:48.60, three seconds off his PR. His teammates Mason Ruiz and Adam Butterfield recorded ninth and 11th place performances, respectively.

Seth Thomasson paced Black Hills thanks to a season-best time of 18:06.10 and Nathan Brazil crossed the finish line in 12th place.

Broome, Clark triumph in league meet

Tumwater’s duo of Alexandra Broome and Tyler Clark ended up on top during Wednesday’s three-team EvCo meet at the Mason County Recreation Area. Both varsity races were three miles, just short of the standard 5,000-meters.

It was a comfortable win in the girls race for Broome, winning by more than a second; her time was 20:14.40. The T-Birds also saw Delilah Cline take seventh in just under 23 minutes.

Centralia was the lone team to have more than three runners and it had eight girls inside the top-12. Liesl Stout, Esther Hopkins and Eva Stout placed fourth-through-sixth with only three seconds separating the trio.

Clark was the lone boys runner to break 18 minutes at the Mason County Recreation Area. James Smith was third, Landon Martin was fifth and six others were in the top-13. For Centralia, Ethan Weiher was second in 18:03.20.

Four other Tiger runners finished in the top-30; Caden Hackett was the fastest amongst that contingent by running under 20 minutes.
