Behind five players with at least two hits and and only striking out twice all game, the Riverhawks started their quest for a C2BL title on the right foot with a 13-3, six-inning triumph over the Mountaineers on Monday night.
Kailea Lairson and Zaya Norberg did the bulk of the heavy lifting for Toledo (7-1, 1-0 C2BL), combining for seven hits, seven RBIs and six runs scored. Norberg gave the Riverhawks a 4-3 lead in the third with an RBI triple, then two pitches later, Lairson launched a two-run homer to cap a five-run frame.
Toledo added three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to end the contest early. Peyton Holter, who tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts in the circle, had an RBI double and Xtyn Norberg drove in two runs on two hits.
Rainier (2-6, 0-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first thanks to a bases-clearing single from Ryleigh Cruse. It had runners in scoring position with two outs, but failed to add to the lead. Over the final five innings, the Mountaineers mustered just two baserunners.
Toledo will hit the road to take on Winlock on Thursday and PWV on Friday while Rainier heads to Toutle Lake on Thursday.
