Timberline wraps up Pierce County tour with win at Bellarmine

It’s been a long week for the Timberline baseball team, with three road games in Pierce County in three days.

The Blazers bounced back from a three-game skid by defeating Bellarmine 12-5 Wednesday afternoon behind a balanced offensive attack and strong relief pitching.

Marley Gamble pushed a run across with a first-inning RBI single before Timberline opened up a 6-0 lead with a five-run second inning, all scored with two outs. Will Tennent plated two with a single in that second frame.

Bellarmine chipped away in the bottom of the second, tallying four runs and chasing starter Ryan Wolfe from the game early. Timberline scored two in the third inning on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to take an 8-4 lead just two three innings into the game.

Gamble entered in the second inning and steamrolled through the Lions lineup. In five scoreless innings of work, he held Bellarmine to just one hit.

“Marley did really well coming in on short notice. He competed well on the mound, and the defense made plays behind him,” Timberline head coach Doug LaPalm said.

Another two-out rally for Timberline put the nail in the coffin in the sixth inning. Ovist capped off a 3-for-4 day at the plate with an RBI single to get the rally started. Tennent, Dalton Abbott and Gamble each drove in a pair of runs. Seven of Timberline’s 12 runs came with two outs.

“Offensively, we did a good job at competing at the plate. We took what the game gave us and took advantage of some defensive errors from them,” LaPalm said.

Timberline (8-10, 8-7 Puget Sound League) will return home Monday, May 4 to face Gig Harbor in the final regular season game of the spring.
