Ethan Thayer pocketed another accolade only an elite number of athletes can achieve: All-American.
The Onalaska senior-to-be uncorked a career-best toss of 196 feet, 2 inches to place seventh in the discus championship division on Sunday at the Nike Outdoor Nationals at Hayward Field in Eugene.
It gives Thayer a first team All-American honor by the NSAF and to boot, he was the second-best junior in the field behind Jackson Kerth from Texas. In Thayer’s six throws, he eclipsed 190 feet four times and his final toss ended up as his best.
About a month after claiming the state title in both the discus and shot put in Class 2B, Thayer also competed in the championship division in the shot put where he placed 36th.
The Loggers also had Emalie Jacoby compete in the discus, triple jump and long jump – all in the emerging elite division – and the senior-to-be’s highest finish was in the triple jump with a leap of 35-01.75.
Luke Barrick competed in the pole vault championship division and finished 22nd overall.
Amongst other local competitors, Centralia’s Sam Volavola earned a 10th place finish in the emerging elite shot put with a throw of 53-07.50. The Class 2A state champ in the shot put was less than a foot away from making the finals.
Volavola also was in the emerging elite discus where he placed 22nd. Also in Lewis County, W.F. West’s Maddox Sampson placed 49th overall in the emerging elite 110 hurdles with a time of 15.53.
Tumwater’s mixed 1,600-meter relay of Blake Kirkpatrick, Cassidy Hedin, Alexandra Broome and Jaxon Budd turned in a time of 3:38.31 to place fourth overall. Broome took 27th in the emerging elite 800 while Budd, the 2A long jump state champ, placed 31st in the championship long jump.
Rochester’s Brooklyn Alfonso competed in the emerging elite javelin on Monday afternoon and finished 28th overall with a best throw of 103 feet.
Olympia graduate Caden Durocher and Timberline graduate Brady Moe, along with Taye Schmidt and Amin Fidaar of Rogers (Puyallup) won the boys club 4x800 meter relay title with a time of 7:37.59 as part of Royal T Track & Field.
Olympia graduate Carson Godfrey finished 30th in the boys shot put with a top throw of 57 feet, 8.5 inches, and took 34th in the boys hammer throw at 175 feet, 5 inches.
Timberline graduate Carmelo Roper's best mark of 44 feet, 5.25 inches, was good enough for 33rd in the boys triple jump.
