The family of a motorcyclist severely injured in a hit-and-run by a drunk driver in Thurston County last week has started a fundraiser to cover his medical costs.
Aadin G. Gosser, 19, of Salem, Oregon, was riding a red 2007 Honda VT600 motorcycle in the center lane of northbound Interstate 5 in Thurston County. At about 9:55 p.m. on Feb. 10, he was struck at about milepost 93 by a black 2006 BMW 325i changing lanes.
The BMW pushed Gosser’s motorcycle into the left shoulder barrier before fleeing the scene.
The at-fault driver, identified by the Washington State Patrol as Jason D. Bennett, 51, of Gig Harbor, is facing possible vehicular assault, DUI and felony hit-and-run charges.
Gosser was wearing a U.S. Department of Transportation-compliant helmet at the time of the crash, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Gosser was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia and was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
“This has been the most terrifying and heartbreaking time for our family, and right now our focus is on praying, staying by his side, and supporting him through every step of his recovery,” Aiden Gosser’s brother, Austin Gosser, said in a written statement attached to an online fundraiser.
The family is asking for donations to cover the “already overwhelming” medical expenses associated with Aiden’s care, which include surgeries, hospital stays, rehabilitation and time away from work. .
“We are asking for help to ease the financial burden so we can focus on what matters most: helping him survive and heal,” Austin Gosser wrote. “If you are able to donate, no matter the amount, it would mean the world to us. And if you can’t donate, we completely understand — sharing this fundraiser and keeping my brother in your prayers is just as appreciated.”
The family had raised $2,165 as of Monday morning.
