Saint Martin’s softball blanks Saint Mary’s to close Texas trip

Saint Martin’s softball closed out a strong showing at the First Pitch Invitational with an 8-0 shutout victory over Saint Mary’s on Sunday, Feb. 1, finishing the tournament with a 4-1 record in Conroe, Texas.

The Saints capped the weekend with another solid pitching performance, ending a tournament that also included an upset win over the nation’s top-ranked team earlier in the week.

In the circle, Kayla Vaughan improved to 3-0 after four shutout innings. Vaughan allowed just one hit and struck out two. The Rattlers would finish with just two hits in the game while Saint Martin’s had eight.

Saint Martin’s broke through after a scoreless opening inning, building momentum with a five-run surge that put the game out of reach. Haley Agena and Kaylee Walker each drove in runs with singles to get the Saints on the board. Agena later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Taylor Orgeles followed with a two-run single to center field.

The Saints tacked on another run earlier in the game when Shelby Lawson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Emilee Morris. Saint Martin’s added two more insurance runs later as Analise Griffiths and Faith Prosch drew bases-loaded walks to seal the win.

Agena finished 2 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI, while Orgeles drove in two runs. Jules Detrinidad added a 2 for 3 performance with a run scored.

Saint Martin’s will look to carry its early-season momentum into the Stanislaus State Invitational, scheduled for Feb. 13–15 in Stanislaus, California.
