Riverhawks’ defensive adjustments pay off in shutout win over Beavers

Ignited by an improved secondary and a 28-point second quarter, the Toledo High School football team notched their second straight win by smacking Tenino 34-0 at home on Friday night.

The Riverhawks (2-1) took film review and saw some needed tweaks to improve the pass defense. They proceeded to have two interceptions, including a 47-yard pick-six by Casen Gale to cap the four-touchdown second stanza.

“We were really sound in our defense,” Toledo head coach Mike Christensen said. “We saw a few things technique-wise. Played good man-to-man coverage.”

Offensively it was the Nico Acosta show for the second straight week. He finished with 178 yards and three touchdowns from six, five and five yards out. Austin Reed added 90 yards rushing. Quarterback Joaquin Acosta was 10-of-14 for 114 yards and a TD pass to Brady Weeks from 22-yards out.

Toledo ended the night with 457 total yards of offense.

“We moved the ball well and when we were clean (on penalties), we looked better,” Christensen said.

Toledo will trek to Menlo and take on Pe Ell/Willapa Valley in a non-league contest next week.
