Despite not drawing a walk, stealing a base or recording an extra base hit, the Mountaineers were in a tie game with the Rams deep into Thursday night. Sara Halterman laced a two-out double to center field to lead North Thurston to a 5-4 triumph at home.
Rainier relief pitcher Elaina Henry got the first two batters out, but couldn’t secure the third out to keep the game going. North Thurston’s Paige Guyer poked a single into right field to set up Halterman’s heroics.
One run in the first and third innings gave the Mountaineers an early 2-0 cushion thanks to a Rams error and a Ryleigh Cruse RBI single. After North Thurston plated four in the fourth to take the lead, Cruse notched a two-run base hit to tie the game.
The senior went 3-for-3 at the plate and worked around six hits in the circle to record three strikeouts. Layla Hill also had three hits and scored three times. Rainier will host Onalaska in a non-league game on Saturday.
