Rainier can’t hold late double-digit lead, fall to Toutle Lake

The Rainier Mountaineers let a 10-point lead with six minutes remaining slip through their fingertips as Toutle Lake stormed back to win 54-49 Thursday night.

Neither team could grab much of an advantage in the first half, with Rainier leading by one after the first quarter and the Ducks taking a four-point lead into halftime.

The Mountaineers, led by Peyton Sheaffer and Nehemiah Linson, used a strong third quarter and early fourth quarter to take what appeared to be a comfortable lead on the road, but the Ducks’ offense came alive in the final six minutes. Senior post Easton White scored 13 of his game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter in the victory.

“White was a monster inside,” Rainier head coach Ben Sheaffer said.

Sheaffer tallied 20 points for Rainier, and Linson scored 13. Freshman Ryder Martin put up eight points, and Jordan Pringle and Ty Beckman contributed three apiece.

The Mountaineers (3-2, 2-1 Central 2B League) head back home Saturday for a date with Adna (1-0, 1-0 C2BL).
