Pope John Paul’s Shaina Verona breaks school 400m record to win league title

The Pope John Paul II track and field team took home a combined 11 Sea-Tac League event titles at Thursday’s Sea-Tac League Championships at Muckleshoot Tribal School.

Sophomore Shaina Verona stole the show, breaking a three-year-old school record in the girls 400 meters at 1:04.52 to win the event. Verona was also a quarter of Pope John Paul II’s winning 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams. 

Junior Kevin Hu swept the distance events, winning league titles in the 800 meters (2:03.10), 1,600 meters (4:35.76) and 3,200 meters (10:23.05). Senior Lathan Piper also took home multiple league titles, winning the 110-meter hurdles with a personal record of 16.76 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles at 42.32 seconds.

Junior Ruby Henry won league titles in the 1,600 meters (5:31.55) and 3,200 meters (11:51.00), winning each event in the league championships for the third time in her three-year prep career. Senior Amy Kondrat earned the league title in 300-meter hurdles at 49.98 seconds, her third league title in the event.



The boys 4x100 relay team of Jacob Hanzeli, Israel Gil, Max Kapust and Cyrus Jones broke a seven-year-old school record at 47.28 seconds, earning fourth.

Sophomore Israel Gil set PRs in the 100 meters at 12.07 seconds and the 200 meters at 24.24, taking fourth and third in the events, respectively.

Northwest Christian’s highest finisher was freshman thrower Sullivan Snyder, who set a new PR in the discus at 110 feet, 9 inches, to finish third.
