Pope John Paul II freshmen Micah Henry set the school’s freshman record during Tuesday’s Sea-Tac League meet at Fort Steilacoom Park.

In his high school debut, Henry finished in second place at 16 minutes and 37.4 seconds, with reigning state 1B champion and senior Kevin Hu winning the race at 16:22.4. Henry’s time is also the sixth-fastest in school history.

Freshman Kyra Deutscher also shined with a time of 21:03.3 to finish third. Senior Ruby Henry, a 2023 state champion and three-time medalist, took home first place at 19:45.7. Senior Isla Valpiani was the runner-up at 20:27.1. A batch of Eagles all finished within nine seconds of each other, as freshman Mira Valpiani (21:29.6), senior Chloe Summers (21:32.7) and senior Lily Warne-McGraw (21:38.1) went 4-5-6.

Seven of the top 10 boys runners during Tuesday’s meet attend Pope John Paul II, while each of the top six girls runners are Eagles. In fact, 14 of the top 21 girls were from Pope John Paul II, as well.

Northwest Christian’s top finisher for the girls race was senior Sarah Slaybaugh, who crossed the finish line in 27:11.9 to come in 23rd. For the boys, sophomore Samuel Bode earned 26th at 21:42.2.

Northwest Christian will compete in the Fort Steilacoom Invitational Saturday afternoon, while Pope John Paul II will head to the Pacific Lutheran University Invitational this weekend.
