A crash in Tenino near Marci Court and Old Highway 99 SE on Monday led to one fatality and one hospitalization.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office shut down Old Highway 99 between Tenino and Tilley Road at about 10:20 a.m. on Monday, May 18, in response to the crash. The roadway remained closed until approximately 6:30 p.m. that afternoon.

The collision involved a dump truck and trailer that struck a sedan head-on, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

For reasons that a sheriff’s office spokesperson said are "unknown," the sedan was traveling the wrong way in the dump truck’s southbound lane when the crash occurred.

Upon arrival, responding agencies observed both vehicles dealing with significant damage and heavy fire involvement.

The responding South Thurston Fire units included E412, T41, T43 and Chief 41, according to a news release from the agency.

Mutual aid assistance was provided by West Thurston Fire with CAP13, E1-1, and M14 from Tumwater Fire Department.

The driver of the sedan, who has not yet been positively identified by the Thurston County Coroner’s Office, died at the scene.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this incident,” South Thurston Fire wrote in a news release.

The driver of the dump truck, whose name has not been released by the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
