Megan Cornfeld and Kyah Terpening became the first Olympia High School girls doubles team to place at the 4A State Tournament in seven years, finishing in seventh place Saturday in Kennewick.
Cornfeld and Terpening defeated Lewis and Clark duo Laila Kaiell and Daphne Rabinovitch in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) in the opening round Friday. In the quarterfinals, the Olympia duo fell in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to Gabi Stukovsky and Najla El-Shimi Lincoln (Seattle).
Terpening and Cornfeld bounced back in the consolation semifinals, knocking off Glacier Peak’s Jasmine Neph and Sofia Carmona in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) to guarantee a state trophy. In the fourth-place match, the Bears were overmatched by Kentridge’s Minh Nguyen and Grace Tram in straight sets (6-1, 6-4).
The Olympia duo was the first to qualify for state doubles since 2023 and the first to place at state since 2019.
In the 4A girls state singles bracket, Emma Meyer picked up a dominant opening-round victory against Jackson’s Teegan Bridgman, sweeping all 12 games in a straight-sets win. Meyer wasn’t able to continue her momentum, however, as she lost in the quarterfinals to Issaquah’s Muskaan Chaudry in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) before falling to Kamiakin’s Kate Berg in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) in an elimination match.
Olympia’s Aaron Hall and Stefan Lucenko earned a victory in the 4A boys state doubles bracket. They bounced back from a narrow straight-sets (6-4, 7-5) loss to a duo from Newport in the opening round to knock out Puyallup’s Isaac Devereux and Cooper Johnson in straight sets (6-2, 7-5). The Bears won the first set of the consolation semifinals against Lincoln’s Raffi Whaley and Gabriel Rooks 6-4 but lost the final two 6-4 and 6-1 to fall short of a trophy.
In the 3A girls doubles tournament, Capital’s Tate Hanson and Nova Harris, the first Capital girls doubles team to make state since 2018, lost in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) in the opening round to Snohomish’s Morgan Gibson and Makenzie Dauer.
