The Olympia volleyball team gave the Puyallup Vikings their toughest challenge in South Puget Sound League play yet, as the Bears fell in five sets Thursday, Oct. 1.
Olympia had its highest-scoring set of the season in the first, gutting out a 29-27 victory. Puyallup took control with a 25-21 set two win and a 25-20 verdict in the third set. The Bears forced a fifth set by defeating the Vikings 25-20 in the fourth, but the Vikings took set five 15-12.
“We’re continuing to take steps in the right direction,” Olympia head coach Christie Oldright said. “The Bears stepped up and battled tonight.”
Stella Sheeran shined with 18 kills, 27 digs and five aces, and Anna Johnston flirted with a triple-double with 25 assists, 11 digs and eight kills. Elyse Juergens and Sophia Deiss were both game-changers on defense, as Juergens logged 21 digs and Deiss tallied five blocks. Deiss also added 11 kills on offense.
Olympia (3-6, 1-3 South Puget Sound League) will host Yelm (0-8, 0-4 SPSL) Monday, Oct. 5.
