The Olympia City Council approved a resolution Tuesday supporting the Olympia School District’s proposed levy renewal.
If passed, the Olympia School District Technology and Capital Projects Replacement Levy on the Feb. 10 special election ballot would replace an existing levy that expires at the end of 2026.
It is estimated to raise $72.9 million over a four year period to fund initiatives including touch screen mobile computer devices, classroom audio systems, Ingersoll stadium improvements, safety sensors installed in secondary schools, Chromebook carts, classroom display systems and replacement IPVS cameras.
“This is a ballot measure that's really about maintaining a lot of things that we have in place in our school district to better prepare our students for whatever it is they want to go to when they leave our system,” said Olympia School District Superintendent Patrick Murphy during a public hearing on the resolution on Tuesday, Jan. 27. “Some of it's not the most exciting stuff in the world, but it's really, really important.”
The resolution passed by the Olympia City Council acknowledges the ongoing partnership between the City of Olympia and the Olympia School District, noting that the district “has shown responsible management and strong leadership in the use of public funds” and that the city council “believes this levy is important to maintaining the high quality of education in the Olympia School District.”
