Northwest Christian’s rally falls short in loss to Friday Harbor

The Northwest Christian baseball team nearly pulled off a comeback from down seven runs in the seventh inning, but the Wolverines ran out of gas and fell 9-7 to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island Friday afternoon.

The Wolverines only recorded one hit all game but managed to score seven runs, including three in the second inning. Northwest Christian walked five consecutive times to start the inning, and a sacrifice fly by Myles McLain made it 3-0.

Friday Harbor, which also shares the Wolverines mascot, recorded a two-run double in the third inning off of Northwest Christian ace Marshall Guyer to cut into the margin. The home Wolverines got to Guyer in the fourth inning with seven runs on six hits and three walks.

McLain replaced Guyer in the bottom of the fourth and kept Friday Harbor off the base paths. He pitched 2.2 hitless innings, only allowing two walks while striking out five batters.

Facing a nine-run deficit in the seventh, Northwest Christian took advantage of more walks to plate its fourth run. Those walks loaded the bases for Guyer, who ripped a two-run single to bring the Wolverines within three. Friday Harbor was two outs away from a no-hitter before that clutch hit by the sophomore.

Bennett Hall grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Parker Cox, but with two outs, Jack Vahey lined out to right field to end the game.

Northwest Christian (10-5, 4-4 Sea-Tac League) will close the regular season Monday with a road game at Ocosta (9-8, 4-2 Pacific 2B League).
