Rainier opened its season with two wins, beating Mossyrock 9-3 and 23-1 in two ends of a doubleheader in Mossyrock on Monday.
The Vikings opened the scoring in Game 1 with a pair of runs in the top of the first, but the Mountaineers immediately responded with five runs in the bottom half to take a 5-2 lead.
That score held until the fifth, when Mossyrock tacked on a run, but Rainier scored four in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.
Blake Fennel tallied two hits and drove in two runs, while Yazama Gurnsey, Kaden Goodman, and Peyton Sheaffer each added an RBI of their own.
Hunter Isom recorded Mossyrock’s lone RBI of the game, while Kevin Mitchell and Atraewe Brown both notched two hits.
Rainier scored a run in the second of Game 2 to take a 1-0 lead, then added 22 runs over the next three frames.
Gurnsey tallied another three hits and three RBIs, as did Sheaffer, while Fennel drove in three of his own as part of his 2 for 4 outing. In one at-bat apiece, Gus Kenney and Nathaniel Maggard both recorded a hit and drove in two runs.
Andrew Cardey pitched all five innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out five.
Gunnar Callies drove in Mossyrock’s lone run of the nightcap while going 2 for 2 at the dish.
Rainier (2-0) will head to Tenino on Tuesday, while Mossyrock (0-2) will head to Winlock on Wednesday.
