A man died Thursday after his vehicle was struck by debris from a pickup truck that had caught fire on Interstate 5 near the Nisqually River.

Daniel P. Hogan, 74, of Seattle, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

The driver of the vehicle struck by debris, Georgina K. Hogan, 73, of Seattle, was not injured in the incident, according to troopers.

According to WSP, a 2000 Ford F-450 pickup truck driven by Kaitlyn S. Sapalic, 30, of Toledo, was traveling northbound on I-5 just south of the Nisqually River at about 4:50 p.m. when it suffered a “mechanical failure” and caught fire.

Debris from the truck then struck a 2026 Subaru Solterra driven by Hogan.

The two vehicles came to rest on opposite shoulders of the road.

Troopers said Sapalic was not injured in the collision. The F-450 was considered totaled.

The roadway was fully blocked for two hours and 30 minutes, according to WSP.
