The Timberline High School girls swim team put together an impressive season debut in a tight 90-86 loss to Steilacoom Thursday afternoon.
Timberline won seven of the 12 events, with junior Layla Nau involved in four victories. She earned the 50-yard freestyle title and clinched a spot in the district meet in the process with a time of 27.47 seconds. She also won the 100-yard freestyle at 1:01.37, another district qualifier. Nau joined Talia Larsen, Brenna Ganey and Kayla Lambiotte in the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay team at 1:57.65. Nau, Ganey, Lewis and Lambiotte also took home the 400-yard freestyle gold at 4:21.79. Both relay teams qualified for districts.
Freshman Nevaeh Lewis had a hand in three event wins. She took home individual wins in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:52.41 and the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:26.21, qualifying for the league meet in both events.
Lambiotte secured a victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:11.67. She also finished second at 5:54.70 in the 500-yard freestyle. Both times were enough to qualify for the district meet.
Lewis, Larsen, Zailynn Dall and Carolynn Olson finished second in the 200-yard medley relay, qualifying for districts at 2:29.46.
Ganey will compete in the league meet in the 100-yard freestyle after taking second behind Nau at 1:06.21.
“For our first swim meet of the season, it went really smoothly. There are a lot of new girls to the team that had their first time in the competitive spotlight, and they all did great,” Timberline head coach Caleb Hegel-Linggi said. “Even though we fell short, we had plenty of girls drop personal-best times, as well as a couple of district-qualifying times, and hopefully have built up the courage to continue to push through the season.”
Timberline will visit Capital Tuesday, Sept. 15.
