Initial primary election results show MGP, Martinez-Dunning, Strickland leading top local races

Washington was one of five states throughout the United States, including Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Virginia, to hold a primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 4, and initial results show Congressional incumbents Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Marilyn Strickland and Thurston County commissioner challenger Nicolas Martinez-Dunning leading the top local races. 

The top two candidates in each primary race will move on to the general election after the primary is certified. 

Additional vote tallies will be announced in the coming days as eligible mail-in ballots arrive and last-minute votes are collected from drop boxes. 

Here in Thurston County, there are 215,385 total registered voters countywide and, according to thurstoncountywa.gov, a total of 31,701 ballots have been turned in for a voter turnout of 15%. 

The races highlighted below feature three or more candidates.

Congressional District No. 3, U.S. Representative 

Incumbent Marie Glusenkamp Perez, D-Skamania, led the race for Congressional District No. 3, U.S. Representative as initial primary election results began to pour in. She reeled in a total of 54,132 votes, or 38.9%, while challenger state Sen. John Braun, R-Centralia, earned 53,869 total votes, or 38.71%.

Brent Hennrich is in third place in the race in the Third Congressional District, earning 21,290 total votes or 15.3%. 

Thurston County Commissioner, District No. 5

Challenger Nicolas Martinez-Dunning led as initial election results in the race for District 5 Thurston County Commissioner began to pour in. He reeled in 2,160 total votes, or 37.91%, while incumbent Emily Clouse tallied 2,000 votes, or 35.1%. 

Michelle Gipson, in third place in the race, earned a total of 1,440 votes, or 25.27%.

Congressional District No. 10, U.S. Representative



Incumbent Marilyn Strickland led as initial results for U.S. Representative of the 10th Congressional District were released. She tallied a total of 39,501 total votes or 49.14%, while Chris D. Chung received 26,745 total votes or 33.27%. 

Adam Arafat earned 7,147 total votes or 8.89% to finish in third place. 

Legislative Dist. 2, Representative Pos. 2

Incumbent Matt Marshall led in the race of Legislative Dist. 2, Representative Pos. 2, as initial results began to show. He received 8,829 total votes or 57.63%, while Angela Taylor earned 4,985 total votes or 32.39%.

Martin L. Miller received 1,548 total votes or 10.06% to finish in third place. 

Legislative Dist. 19, Representative Pos. 2

In the race for Rep. 2 in Washington state’s 19th Legislative District, challenger Terry Carlson led over incumbent Joel McEntire as initial results poured in. Carlson received 11,678 total votes, or 44.04%, while McEntire received 10,830 votes, or 40.84%.

Jimi O’Hagan was third in the race by earning 2,024 total votes or 7.63%.

Legislative Dist. 35, Representative Pos. 1

Incumbent Dan Griffey led the primary race in Washington’s 35th Legislative District for the Representative Pos. 1 seat. He earned 11,730 total votes or 52.84%, while challenger Jim Pierson earned 6,373 total votes or 28.71%.

Shaena Garberich, who finished third in the race, earned 4,080 total votes or 18.38%.

Public Utility District Commissioner, District No. 1

Incumbent Jim Campbell led as early results for Public Utility District Commissioner of District No. 1 began to show in the primary election. He received 5,907 total votes or 57.61%, while challenger Troy Kirby earned 2,826 total votes or 27.56%.

Bruce D. WIlkinson Jr. earned 1,471 total votes or 14.35% to finish in third place.
