In Focus: LP Elementary School's 'Earth Day Garden Extravaganza' creates school garden

LP Brown Elementary School hosted its Earth Day Garden Extravaganza on Friday, April 17,  bringing together students, staff and community partners to begin transforming a corner of campus into a vibrant outdoor learning space.

Together, they planted hundreds of native plants that will grow into a thriving school garden.

In a full circle moment, students from Thurgood Marshall Middle School’s CSI program joined the event, helping LP Brown students plant many of the same native plants they started from seed earlier this year.

This project has been made possible through the generous support of the Angela J. Bowen Conservancy Foundation, West Olympia Rotary, Washington Native Plant Society, Community Foundation of South Puget Sound, Olympia Education Foundation and the LP Brown PTO.

The space will become a native plant garden designed as both a welcoming gathering place and a hands-on learning environment. Students will explore topics such as watersheds, ecosystems and the food and medicinal properties of native plants.

The Olympia School District said the project reflects a shared commitment to helping students build a deeper connection to the land and the environment around them.

“We look forward to seeing this space grow and the learning it will inspire for years to come!” the Olympia School District said in a social media post.
