The High Rock Lookout and a surrounding 150‑foot area will remain closed to the public as reconstruction work enters its final stages, a news release from the U.S. Forest Service announced Thursday.
The closure is an extension of a previous order and will remain in effect through Oct. 31.
This continued closure supports the ongoing restoration of the historic High Rock Lookout in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest’s Cowlitz Valley Ranger District. In 2025, the lookout’s foundation was replaced. Restored structural components were transported back to the site by the Sand Mountain Society.
Reconstruction has been difficult, as in early June the historic fire lookout was struck by vandals who smashed in the door and damaged multiple windows and window frames.
Tools and supplies were also thrown over the cliff at the lookout, and some of the building’s original ceiling materials, which had been restored and prepared for reinstallation, were broken and scattered over the rocks.
Volunteers are now completing the remaining work, including installing new ceiling materials, windows and other key features needed to finish the restoration.
Due to the lookout’s cliffside location and its high visitation, closing the area was necessary to protect both the public and project personnel during construction activities, according to the Forest Service.
Extending the closure helps ensure a safe work environment and allows restoration crews to complete the project efficiently, the news release stated.
The High Rock trail (No. 266) and the High Rock trailhead are now open and accessible to visitors. To view the full closure order and a map, visit https://tinyurl.com/4fmcsem6.
