Halpern breaks indoor 600m program record at Portland Indoor

Saint Martin's freshman Kekaihulali Halpern set a new program in the women's 600 meters at the Portland Indoor 1 Sunday, Jan. 25 at the University of Portland.

Halpern finished fourth in the 600 meters with a time of 1 minutes, 38.75 seconds. The freshman from Hilo, Hawaii, was one of many standouts for the Saints. in a meet that also included programs such as The Evergreen State College, Oregon State, Portland, Portland State, and Seattle University, among others. 

Halpern and her twin sister Kekaimalino Halpern helped the women's 4x400 relay team finish fifth at 4:29.62. Kadence Merritt and Starlen Wong made up the other half of the relay team  that scored points for Saint Martin's.

For the men's team, freshman Matthias White finished third in the 600 meters at 1:24.76, and he represented a quarter of the 4x400 relay team that placed third at 3:37.63., just four seconds off from the first-place finisher. Jake Beck, Tyler Scott and Ethan Coon were the other three members of the team. The Saints' "B" 4x400 relay team of Matt Cooper, Garrich Lindley, Aric Jacklin and Noe Ortega finished sixth at 3:47.83. 



Coon also finished ninth in the 600 meters at 1:28.58. Beck, seventh at 2:01.00; Scott, eighth at 2:01.07; and Cooper, 10th at 2:01.54; placed in the top 10 in the 800 meters. Lindley set a personal record in the 800 meters at 2:04.77 to finish 15th, and Jordan Pacheco-Mendez earned a new PR in the same event at 2:27.84 in a 23rd-place effort.

Evergreen's men's 4x400 relay team of Nathaniel Sanchez, Daniel Sanchez, Austin Major and DeAndre Wright finished 13th at 3:58.75. Sophomore Evan Williams was the top individual placer for the Geoducks as he finished 17th in the one-mile race with a PR of 4:37.52. Nathaniel Sanchez took 18th (2:09.86) in the 800 meters. 

Sophomores Maddy Palek, 21st at 5:40.62, and Sherlyn Perales, 23rd at 5:40.98, set personal bests in the women's one-mile race for Evergreen.
