The Evergreen State College volleyball team is off to a tough start in Cascade Collegiate Conference play, falling to 0-6 after getting swept by Lewis-Clark State College Friday and Walla Walla Saturday.
In Lewiston, Idaho, Lewis-Clark rolled in the first set with a 12-2 run out of the gates and won 25-13.
The Warriors jumped out to a 7-2 lead in set two before the Geoducks went on a 5-1 run to crawl within a point, with Sophia Scroggins responsible for back-to-back kills during that run. Evergreen tied the frame at 12-12, but the Warriors pulled away to win 25-19.
In the third set, both teams went back and forth until Lewis-Clark broke the frame open with six unanswered points to take an eight-point lead. The Warriors secured the sweep with a 25-12 victory in the final stanza.
Scroggins led the Geoducks with seven kills and six digs in the loss, while Bright Brubaker contributed six kills and four blocks.
In a late-night trip to Walla Walla Saturday night, Evergreen held an early 5-4 lead with Brubaker connecting on kills from assists by Riley Mangan. But errors on attacks and serves piled up for the Geoducks, and Walla Walla took a 1-0 set lead with a 25-18 triumph in the first set.
Everything went wrong for Evergreen early in the second set as the Wolves took a 10-1 lead, with six of those points credited to Geoducks attack errors. Evergreen pulled within seven before Walla Walla closed out the frame on a 5-1 run to win 25-14.
The Geoducks looked strong to start set three, leading 7-4 behind two kills from Mikayla Kelly. Walla Walla’s ensuing 6-1 run to take the lead ended up serving as the final lead change of the set in the Wolves’ 20-25 third-set victory.
Scroggins once again paced the Geoducks with seven kills and six digs, and Kelly added six kills, one block and one dig. Mangan compiled 17 assists, while Paron Holmes logged 15 digs and two aces.
Evergreen (1-9, 0-6 CCC) has now lost seven in a row and will look to snap the skid on the road against Northwest University Wednesday, Sept. 23.
