The Evergreen State College volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw in The College of Idaho Saturday, as the Geoducks were swept at home 6-25, 12-25, 21-25.

Despite the loss, Sophia Scroggins and Bright Brubaker each matched a game-high with seven kills apiece.

The Yotes proved why they’re one of the top teams in the Cascade Collegiate Conference in the first set. After they took an early 11-6 lead, the Yotes scored the final 14 points to win 25-6. Brubaker had two kills in the first set, but the Geoducks were slowed down by seven attack errors and four service errors.

In the second set, Evergreen remained within striking distance of The College of Idaho. A service error by the Yotes made it 13-10, but, once again, the Yotes heated up in the second half of the set with a 12-2 finish to win 25-12.

Evergreen couldn’t keep up with The College of Idaho early in the third set, trailing 6-1. But the Geoducks came alive with a 5-0 run, as Brubaker, Scroggins and Riley Mangan each logged a kill to put them up 9-7. The Geoducks led by as many as six (18-12) until the Yotes rattled off a 7-0 run to take back the lead. An Aubrie Coots kill cut the Yotes’ lead to 22-21, but the Yotes put the finishing touches on the sweep by scoring the last three points.

It was a tough weekend for the Geoducks (1-5), who also faced CCC powerhouse Eastern Oregon Friday and was swept 16-25, 13-25, 5-25. Brubaker recorded six kills in the loss.

Evergreen will host Bushnell University Friday, Sept. 11 and Corban University Saturday, Sept. 12.
