The Evergreen State College volleyball team struggled against two Cascade Collegiate Conference opponents from Oregon this week, as the Geoducks were swept by Bushnell on Friday and by Corban on Saturday.
Evergreen took a 5-2 lead to open the first set against Bushnell with three different players spiking kills during the run. A couple of Geoducks attack errors sparked a 5-0 Beacons run, and Bushnell kept rolling to push its lead to as large as eight. A flurry of Beacons attack errors helped Evergreen pull within two before Bushnell closed on a 4-0 lead to win the first set 25-19.
After the Geoducks scored the first two points of set two, it was all Bushnell, which prevailed 25-10.
Bushnell broke an 8-8 tie in the third set with seven unanswered points and 17-3 overall run in a 25-11 victory.
Sophia Scroggins led the Geoducks with 11 kills, seven digs and an ace in the loss, while Zosia Formella and Bright Brubaker combined for nine kills.
In the first set against Corban on Saturday, the story was similar for Evergreen as it was in Friday’s game. The Geoducks jumped out to a 4-2 lead before Corban eventually found its groove, winning the opening frame 25-15. Sets two and three were dominated wire to wire by the Warriors, who took the second frame 25-12 and the third 25-11.
Scroggins continued her strong weekend with eight kills and two digs. Annalise Orlowski added five kills, one ace and one dig.
Evergreen (1-7, 0-4 CCC) has lost five straight and will look to stop the skid on its road trip to Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, Friday, Sept. 18.
